WordPress or Shopify: which fits you?
It's the most frequently asked question in my introductory meetings: should I choose WordPress or Shopify? I build with both platforms, so here's an honest answer — without commercial preference.
The short answer
Selling is your main goal? Shopify. Content and findability are central? WordPress.
WordPress: flexible and strong in content
WordPress is a publishing machine. Blogs, service pages, cases, landing pages — everything related to content and SEO is where WordPress excels. With a custom theme it is lightning fast and fully customisable.
- Strongest platform for SEO and content marketing
- Complete freedom in design and functionality
- Low monthly costs (hosting only)
- Downside: requires maintenance, updates, security, backups
Shopify: built to sell
Shopify is designed for e-commerce from the ground up. Payments, inventory, shipping, discount codes, abandoned carts — it's all built in as standard and it works flawlessly. As a Shopify specialist I build custom themes on it that look premium and convert.
- Best checkout experience of all platforms
- Reliable, secure and scalable — zero maintenance
- Huge app ecosystem for marketing and logistics
- Downside: monthly costs and less freedom in content
And what about WooCommerce?
WooCommerce (a webshop on WordPress) works, but combines the drawbacks of both worlds: the maintenance of WordPress plus the complexity of a shop. Only worthwhile if content is your core activity and you sell a modest range.
The decision guide
- Service business, freelancer, B2B → WordPress
- Webshop with growth ambition → Shopify
- Lots of content + small shop → WordPress + WooCommerce
- In doubt → schedule a call, I'll advise you honestly
